Maths mat eal resource

A word mat listing key concepts with pictures numbers and words which supports the vocabulary needed to access identification of 2D and 3D shapes, the four number operations, simple fractions, numbers up to twenty, 2x, 5x, and 10x tables, coinage, o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past times on a clock face.

Activities include matching activities where learners match pictures with words and descriptions, pictures with numbers in figures and in words; lotto games where learners match labelled pictures with written descriptions, pictures with words and written descriptions, written phrases with symbols, labelled pictures with pictures, pictures with labelled quantities. There are also substitution tables where the learner selects appropriate information to complete a sentence. These activities encourage learners to work collaboratively in a small group and to use repetitive language to consolidate key concepts. The language functions are: identifying, describing and comparing. Extension activities are suggested using role play to explore using language in context and generating word problems for another learner to solve. This resource can be used with 5- to-7 and 8- to 11-year-olds at a beginner or intermediate level.

I would perhaps add a break down of pronunciation or for some students the equivalent words in their own first language.
